Senior Engineering Manager / Head of Software

Location: South Bristol (Hybrid – 2 days onsite per week)

Salary: £80,000 – £90,000 per annum

Start Date: ASAP

About the Role:

We are seeking a Senior Engineering Manager / Head of Software for our client based in South Bristol. This is a hands-on, strategic leadership opportunity where you will have the chance to build and lead a software development function from the ground up, contributing to the growth and future direction of the company. You’ll play a pivotal role in transitioning legacy projects, bringing development in-house, and building an internal development team. This role offers the potential to grow into a CTO position as the company expands.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Team Building & Leadership:
    • Lead the recruitment, mentorship, and management of a high-performing software development team.
    • Collaborate with third-party vendors to manage the transition to in-house development.
  • Technical Strategy & Execution:
    • Plan, execute, and deliver software projects that align with business goals.
    • Manage risks, track progress, and ensure timely delivery.
  • Technical Leadership:
    • Establish and enforce development standards and best practices.
    • Evaluate and integrate new technologies to support both technical and business roadmaps.
    • Provide technical oversight through code reviews and technical stand-ups.

Preferred Skills and Experience: (Not all are essential, but ideal candidates will stand out with the following.)

  • Proven experience setting up a software development function from scratch.
  • Hands-on coding abilities with experience leading code reviews and daily stand-ups.
  • Strong background in team recruitment, building, and scaling.
  • Working knowledge of web development technologies: JavaScript, HTML, CSS, XML, XSLT, SQL Server.
  • Experience with major digital transformations, especially in bringing development in-house.
  • Strong collaboration skills with the ability to work with third-party vendors.
  • Experience in setting up technical roadmaps, strategy, and software architecture.
